Background
When we met them, health and fitness entrepreneurs Ted Curtin and Paul Gosselin were having trees cleared in an area of East Hamstead, NH, about 30 miles south of Concord. Their intention was to build a premier pickleball club.
Their vision turned into a reality. Today Pickleball 603 is a private, member-based, climate-controlled facility that boasts six indoor and six outdoor tournament-sized pickleball courts, as well as a full-size restaurant and bar, pro shop, and lots more amenities.

Challenge
Cooper Lighting Solutions sales specialists JP Ranalli and Matthew Roy -- both seasoned lighting professionals -- teamed up to ensure the new pickleball club had lighting that enhanced both play and post-play activities.
General concerns when designing court sport lighting include high-quality visibility that improves playability and supports player comfort and safety.
The original site had absolutely no existing electric light. However, the proposed club building would be very close to a residential neighborhood as well as Route 111, a two-lane roadway, so light spillage and light control were important concerns.
Inside the restaurant, bar, and pro shop, the club’s owners wanted lighting that supported the club’s high-end atmosphere.
And of course, as with any new build, this lighting project required close coordination between the Cooper Lighting team and the electrical contractors – in this case, Kingston Electric.
Solution
JP and Matthew from Cooper lighting Solutions worked with the owners and Reflex Lighting to help ensure the lighting design specified the right lighting for every area of the club, i.e., court lighting that improves play and supports safety, restaurant/bar lighting that promotes comfort and post-game relaxation, exterior building lighting that creates excellent nighttime visibility for members.
At the time, IES (the Illuminating Engineering Society) didn’t yet have recommended practices for pickleball court lighting. JP and Matthew had to rely on their experience and a lot of help from agent Mike O’Brien from Reflex Lighting to determine what lighting had the best illumination levels and lighting uniformity for the six indoor pickleball courts.

Not only practical, the PrentaLux lights have become a popular conversation piece in the club’s restaurant and pro shop.
Results
The new Pickleball 603 club is a hit! Cooper Lighting Solutions products helped the owners achieve their vision of creating a premier pickleball club with lighting that aces performance, safety, and style.
High Illumination Levels: The Metalux High Bay offers lumen packages up to 48,000, so the new court lighting is strong enough to light the action on the court as well as the height of the ball trajectory.
Uniformity: The Metalux High Bays provide consistent light levels across the playing area, with no hotspots and dark patches to make tracking the ball difficult.
Glare Avoidance: The court fixtures were positioned so players aren’t looking straight into them when serving or returning high balls.
No Light Trespass: The precision-engineered optical distributions of Lumark Prevail Discrete exterior building lighting, coupled with simple house side shields, help to ensure light goes only where directed.
Energy Efficiency: Cooper Lighting Solutions LEDs reduce both energy and operating costs.
Unique Lighting: PrentaLux’s many colors, textures, and shapes offer endless possibilities for stunning personalized lighting.
