Every recessed light in a fire rated ceiling is an opening in that ceiling. Where a floor/ceiling assembly is required to have a fire-resistance rating, the International Building Code requires recessed fixtures to be installed so the required fire resistance is not reduced. Building codes often require fire rated downlights or enclosures to restore that resistance, and with a standard fixture, that has meant building a drywall box or fitting a fire rated cover, one opening at a time.
HALO Fire Safe Solutions take that step off the job. The full line of fire rated downlights and housings is code compliant and easy to install, and it can prevent the passage of flames and toxic gases through the ceiling for up to two hours in accordance with UL 263.
Where fire rated ceilings show up
Fire rated ceiling requirements are common in multi-family buildings and townhomes, where ceilings or floors separate dwelling units. They are also common in attached garage ceilings below bonus rooms, and in two-story homes with finished basements or attics where penetrations connect one habitable level to another. Rules vary by jurisdiction, so check the governing code, such as the IRC or IBC, with the local authority.
Remodel: canless that mounts directly to the ceiling
RLFR and HLBFR canless downlights mount directly to the ceiling for easy remodeling, with no housing required. RLFR pairs a recessed baffle trim with a curved diffuse lens, and HLBFR is a slim design with a low-glare prismatic lens. Spring-loaded arms hold either fixture directly to the fire rated ceiling for a secure, AIR-TITE fit.
Both are 5-Color Field-SeleCCTable™. A switch on the back of the fixture selects one of five color temperatures, from warm white (2700K) to daylight (5000K), and both dim to 5%.
New construction: set it at rough-in
Fire Rated New Construction Housings go in before drywall. They are double walled, filled with fire rated material, available in 3, 4, 5 and 6-inch apertures, and made for HALO LED integrated trims. Planning canless on new work? Add a HALO Canless Mounting Frame during rough-in to reserve the location.
For projects with both standard and fire rated ceilings, the JB4FR2 junction box housing works in either, with up to 2-hour protection when installed per International Building Code Section 714. It takes any HALO 4-inch LED trim or any sized HALO surface mount downlight, and its Pass-N-Thru™ hanger bars shorten without tools to fit spaces from 7 to 24 inches.
True protection, tested
Inside RLFR, ceramic fiber insulation withstands temperatures up to 1850°F for up to two hours. RLFR is listed to UL 263, ASTM E119 and CAN/ULC-S101, and HALO fire rated housings are fire rated for up to two hours in accordance with UL 263. Before you submit
Verify each product’s listing and test standard, confirm the ceiling falls within the listed range (½ to 2 inches for HALO canless), and document it for the inspector.
