School Lighting Retrofit

Case Study:

School Lighting Retrofit

Skyline Elementary, Omaha, Nebraska

Background

The Skyline Elementary School is part of the Elkhorn School District in Omaha, Nebraska.

To create an even better learning environment for its approximately 400 students, the school district planned an extensive remodeling project, including the updating of classrooms, corridors, library, restrooms, ceilings, carpeting, wall coverings, and of course lighting.

Challenge

Prior to the school refresh, Skyline Elementary’s lighting was dated and not as energy-efficient as it could be.

Before, the only lighting control the teachers had was On/Off switches; they were requesting more flexible control over the lighting in their classrooms.

The school’s lighting was a wired system. However, once demolition began, the contractors discovered none of the existing wires were labeled, creating what is normally a nightmare situation for contractors.

The entire remodel project was too big of a job to complete during the summer when classes were in session. Getting the job done quickly – without sacrificing quality – was one of the goals for all involved with the remodel.

Solution

As is often the case with school budgets, money was tight; the decision was made not to upgrade to 100% wireless but instead create a hybrid lighting system that connects wired lighting and wireless controls.

WaveLinx digital lighting control from Cooper Lighting Solutions was the perfect solution, making it easy to seamlessly integrate wired and wireless control devices.

To the great relief of the contractors, it didn’t matter that the existing wires were unlabeled. WaveLinx wirelessly supplies power to the wired fixtures via wall stations; there was no need to reroute the wires above the ceiling.

WaveLinx allows for dimming, so the teachers have more control over and options with the lighting in their classrooms.

And WaveLinx makes commissioning effortless. Many users commission their systems themselves right from their cell phones with the very intuitive WaveLinx app. However, in this case, the commissioning was completed by Michael Yoch, a representative from Mercer Zimmerman, the Midwest’s leading lighting and controls agency.

Wireless is the easy button. That’s something we hear a lot… Connecting wired to wired can be complex. Using WaveLinx, connecting wired and wireless is a lot easier.

Results

The entire remodel of the Skyline Elementary School took about a year; the lighting system has been up and running for a year with no hiccups.

According to Michael Yoch, “(WaveLinx) is pretty robust. Even with concrete block walls, it does a really good job of getting the signal out to all the devices.”

And what was the reaction of the teachers and school board?

“It was really neat to see their expressions and hear the comments they made,” says Michael. “Everyone was saying, ‘Oh my gosh, this was perfect.’”
