SOURCE Awards Winner: Emily Price
Emily Price was a winner of the 31st annual SOURCE Awards in 2007 for her Sanchez Residence project. The then-sophomore graduated from Virginia Tech in 2009 and has gone on to pursue a career in interior design.
Price now works at the multidisciplinary firm Davis Partnership Architects in Denver, Colorado, where she is one of 12 interior designers on a team that offers architectural services ranging from landscaping to planning. While Price says she has mostly worked on corporate and higher education projects, the company supports a range of industries including healthcare, multifamily and hospitality.
Prior to joining Davis Partnership Architects, Price worked in Baltimore at the multidisciplinary firm Ayers Saints Gross Architects and Planners. She interned at the firm while in school and joined the team full-time for three years after graduation.
Winning the SOURCE Student Award of Recognition while she was in school helped Price in her career. “I think it accelerated the job search,” she said. “It’s a great thing to put on a resume and a great topic of conversation.”
Price says the lighting fixtures chosen for each of her projects are client-driven and task-driven. Additionally, as her clients’ LED usage rate hovers around 50 percent, Prices says she encourages clients to install more LED-based lighting in projects because it’s more cost-effective.
Looking to the future, she sees a lot of opportunities for the lighting industry.
“The technology is progressing not only to LEDs, but also lighting technology that you can operate from an iPad or individual computer instead of a single panel system,” Price said. “It’s allowing users to personalize their space and control lighting levels as necessary.”
The SOURCE Awards competition, established in 1977, focuses on furthering the understanding, knowledge and function of lighting as a primary element in design. Designed to recognize and honor the bright future of the lighting design industry, the awards are part of Eaton’s commitment to building the pipeline of lighting design talent.
The SOURCE Awards are open to students who use Cooper Lighting's lighting fixtures and controls products in a conceptual interior or exterior lighting design. University students studying architecture, design, engineering or related disciplines are invited to enter.
